There are a lot of things that have been weighing my mind down recently. Two of the big ones are this crazy election we're facing and figuring out the challenges of my new career path. The pressure of recruiting piano majors is definitely the most difficult part of my new career path at the University of the Cumberlands. It sometimes seems like finding young people who want to major in classical music is an impossible task. However, I know that building my studio is not something that is going to happen overnight. I'm going to keep working hard and trying new things until I see the results I want.
Until then, I have to keep my frame of mind healthy if I want to be productive and a positive influence on those around me. Concerning the election, I will turn off social media and practice during debates, and I will continue to gladly "unfollow" people who decide to keep talking about it (I'm glad there are people that are passionate about what they feel is the well-being of our country. But this time around, I just can't take it). Concerning the future of my career path, I will keep listening to From the Top podcasts. I first learned about this radio show when Christopher O'Riley came to play the Gershwin Piano Concerto with the Pensacola Symphony while I was in the viola section there. I was excited to recently find their podcasts, and I have been listening to them on the way to and from work. It is so encouraging to hear all this young people who are so passionate about music and who are truly excelling in it. It is hard to believe how good these kids are!!! One of the best parts for me is the fact that these kids come from all over the country. Sure, many of them are studying in the big cities like New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, but some of them come from small towns all across the states. Classical music doesn't belong to an elite, privileged few. It is truly for everyone. If you worry about the future of classical music, I highly encourage you to find From the Top's podcast and let these kids encourage your heart.
